About us

The origin of Viña Olabarri lies in the love and respect for wine that Pablo Olabarri Bikandi instilled in his family. Pablo’s enthusiasm for wine arose during the long periods he spent in Haro-the Capital of Rioja, when he was young.

In 1985 that love was transformed into the acquisition of a 19th century winery in Anguciana,an optimal place for ageing wine. This was the starting point of a family business which has always been close to the customer His son-Luis Olabarri, has managed to maintain that proximity to the customer while betting for the expansion and modernization of the winery’s facilities with the acquisition in 1989 of new premises to house around 4,000 barrels and a cellar for aging over 800,000 bottles.

Along these nearly forty years, Viña Olabarri has excelled in the elaboration of high-quality wines with outstanding recognitions for its Reserva and Gran Reserva wines. The size of the company allows a detailed care in the production and selection of vineyards close to the winery and restates the affection and patience with which the essence of Rioja Alta is bottled.

A bit of history

1985

Mr. Pablo Olabarri, along with several partners, decides to acquire and rebuild a century-old cellar in the village of Anguciana.

1989

Bodegas Rubí, S.A. is founded and our first wine-VIÑA OLABARRI Reserva 1985 is released to the market.

1990

The winery in Haro is built in order to be able to offer a full range of aged wines.

1998

The Rioja Regulatory Council chooses for the first time our VIÑA OLABARRI Gran Reserva 1989 as its institutional wine.

2001

Our corporate name changes, becoming VIÑA OLABARRI, S.A.

2002

Expansion of the Haro winery with the construction of the bottle cellar, with capacity for 800,000 bottles.

2005

Company presentation to the public -19th October at the Carlton Hotel ( Bilbao) of our new BIKANDI wines, Crianza 2001 and Reserva 1998.

2008

The Rioja Regulatory Council chooses our VIÑA OLABARRI Gran Reserva 2001 as its institutional wine.

2010

The export department is set in motion. We begin to participate and gain international recognition in the world’s most important wine contests.

​We expanded our portfolio with the incorporation of VIÑA OLABARRI White.

2011

The Rioja Regulatory Council chooses again one of our wines as its institutional wine, this time, VIÑA OLABARRI Gran Reserva 2004.

2012

Our first Organic wine, BIKANDI Crianza 2009, is launched to the market.

2014

We turned 25 years old and to celebrate it we hold a successful Open Doors Weekend (18th and 19th October) to gather our customers and friends in our wineries.

2018

The prestigious British wine magazine Decanter selects our BIKANDI Reserva as “PLATINUM BEST IN SHOW” the Best Red Wine in the World over 15 Pounds (Decanter World Wine Awards 2018 -DWWA-).

2019

Our wines continue traveling around the world and are popular in countries like Sweden, the Netherlands, Poland, Czech Republic, Brazil, Japan, USA, Canada, etc.

2021

Excellent score of our Gran Reserva Viña Olabarri in the special Rioja 2021 Tim Atkin.
The Wine Up Guide 2021 awards our wines Bikandi Crianza Ecológico and Bikandi Reserva 2009 with a Gold Medal in blind tasting
