It is very important to choose well the glass where we are going to enjoy a good wine. It is so wide the array of glasses one can find in the market depending on the drink that it is not an easy task to find a suitable wine glass among beer, sparkling, cider, sherry, cognac, spirits or water glasses.
But let’s focus on our favorite ones: wine glasses.
Did you know that the shape, size, cleaning and the material glasses are made of have an influence on wine flavors and aromas?
In this post we are giving you some hacks for you to choose the best glass for enjoying your wines without the need of becoming a pro somm.
AtendiIf we pay attention to its shape we can differentiate four different parts: rim, bowl, stem and foot.
- The rim should have a smaller diameter than the bowl. The smaller the rim the bigger the aroma concentration.
- The bowl must be wide in order to allow wine a good oxygenation.
- The stem has to be long enough to let us hold the glass comfortably without heating the wine with our hands.
- The foot’s only purpose is to support the other three parts of the glass and to act as a base.
There are many types of glasses depending on the shape: vintage, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Pinot Noir, Cabernet/Merlot, Chardonnay… our advise is that is not too big and therefore uncomfortable because our aim is to enjoy wine.
Best glasses are made of thin crystal-clear glass and the most relevant thing: with no ornaments or embellishments that do not allow to observe wine legs easily.
One of the most important things in a wine glass is that it has to be very clean and lacking fragrance. Our recommendation is to clean them with loads of warm water but with only a bit of dishwasher detergent. It is essential to rinse them well. Afterwards-if possible, dry them with a cloth but not any kitchen cloth but a microfiber one especially designed for glassware.
A useful tip if you do not have much time to clean all your glasses -if they have not been used for quite a long time and your guests are coming soon, is to rinse them with wine. This is made by pouring a bit of wine into the first glass and then making it pass from one glass to another twisting the glass while doing so in order to leave all the inside glass covered with wine. This way your glasses will only smell and taste of wine. We are sure that it will also fun for you and your friends and family.
Types of wine
Red wine glasses are normally bigger than white wine glasses but you can use the same type for both and it is fine. For sparkling you have flute glasses, which are taller and narrower and preserve better the cold and bubbles for this type of wine. But that does not mean you cannot enjoy a sparkling wine in a red or white glass, as it is the trend nowadays.
After all this information that we hope it helps you, we recommend you a good wine glass, simple and that really allows you to enjoy every sip of the wine you have chosen and.. would it be OLABARRI, always better.
